Queen Beatrix abdicates throne. Investiture of King Willem-Alexander

After 33 years of service to the Netherlands, Her Majesty Queen Beatrix relinquished the throne in Amsterdam today, and her oldest son, the Prince of Orange, became His Majesty King Willem-Alexander.

During the ceremony, King Willem-Alexander swore to be faithful to the Constitution and to faithfully discharge the duties of his office.

In return, the members of the two Houses swore or affirmed that they will uphold the doctrine that the ministers, and not the King, are responsible for acts of government and that they will uphold the rights of the monarchy.
