Transatlantic Perspectives for Global Economic Recovery

As the world economy is recovering, economic growth has not yet led to recovery of the labor market and trade is not completely back to pre-recession levels. What can be done about this in the international community? What is the role of the US and the EU in this? What are their common interests, both in relation to each other as to the rest of the world? Join us in our discussion and share your views!

Background

In his US Trade Policy Agenda 2010, President Barack Obama recognizes the immense and highly integrated trade relationship between the US and the EU. Against the backdrop of our efforts to climb out of the economic profundity, he calls for a deepening of this relationship by sharing knowledge on key aspects of our trade relationship, the removal of remaining impediments, and for minimising trade conflict in the regulatory sphere. As the delegations of the Netherlands, Belgium and the EU in the US, we gladly take up this outstretched hand. In close cooperation with dedicated people in the US Administration, the think tank community, and representatives of the business world, we are working on a conference 'Transatlantic Perspectives for Global Economic Recovery', scheduled for spring 2011.

Seminar

In preparation we have organized a small-scale seminar on November 30, 2010, for a select group of invited researchers and professionals. The objective of this seminar was to explore, on the basis of existing empirical studies, the commonalities and divergences between the US and EU as to i) the effects of export promotion policies, ii) the effects of (the removal of) barriers to transatlantic trade for the US and EU, and iii) the effects of (the removal of) barriers to global trade for the US and the EU. A discussion paper on these topics has been used as input for the seminar, and later on an updated version will serve as starting point for the high level conference in 2011. Some of the presentations that were given during the seminar will be posted under the subpage seminar.

Content

This website gives an overview of existing literature on both transatlantic and global trade topics. They serve as a framework from where an online discussion ahead of the seminar can take place.
